Opening June 15: The Gender Show at the George Eastman House, Rochester, New York.

In common use, the word gender may refer to biological sex, self-identity, perceived identity or imposed identity. Gender can be both fluid and ambiguous. Many of the ways we express and identify gender are based on visual clues. George Eastman House is proud to present The Gender Show, an exhibition that explores ways gender has been presented in photographs, ranging from archetypal to non-traditional to subversive representations, with a special emphasis on the performances that photography can encourage or capture.

Yolanda Cuomo is the curatorial voice behind some of the 20th century’s greatest photographic books. This year, alongside Melissa Harris, Cuomo is co-curating this year’s LOOK3 Festival of the Photograph in Charlottesville, Va. Read about her life and career here on LightBox.

“Many art directors have big egos and really want to impose their hand, their vision of a thing. But some art directors, like Yo, want to look at the world and are really not trying to interject themselves too much. Very often, a book is like a baby, you just have to try not to choke it. So Yolanda is wonderful to work with because she goes with you. She went with me and just let the book, the baby, breathe. And this is really what I appreciate about Yolanda: her great kindness and this great gentleness in approaching the process. She is putting the work, which is the book, ahead of her own ego.” —Gilles Peress

Photograph by Ed Kashi—VIIToo SweetA fundraising event for La...

Photograph by Ed Kashi—VII

Too Sweet
A fundraising event for La Isla Foundation, a public health and policy NGO addressing a fatal epidemic of Chronic Kidney Disease among sugarcane workers in Nicaragua, featuring an exhibit of Ed Kashi’s photographs.

Friday, June 21, 2013
7 - 9 p.m.

Cafe Integral at American Two Shot
135 Grand St.
New York, NY 10013

More information on La Isla Foundation here.

Photograph by Shahidul Alam/Drik/Majority World

Kalpana Chakma had the audacity to speak out against military occupation by her own army. In the early hours of the morning of the 12th June 1996, she had been abducted at gunpoint. The principal accused, Lieutenant Ferdous has never been questioned by the police. The military, it conveniently appears has no record of him. He too has ‘disappeared’.

Using extensive research and photographic and forensic techniques, Shahidul Alam and Saydia Gulrukh have tried to produce tangible visuals of a scene that has been made invisible through the passage of time and to break a silence successive Bangladeshi governments have carefully nurtured for seventeen long years.
