Today I heard the sad news that Gigi Giannuzzi, the publisher of Trolley Books, passed away today.

When I look on my bookshelf, there’s a huge section devoted to the influence of Gigi Giannuzzi and his life’s work at Trolley Books. Each of Gigi’s volumes reflected his true passion for publishing the stories most people wanted to turn away from. He took incredible risks to make people care — I can’t think of a more honorable mission.

Off the top of my head and in no particular order, here are just a few ways Gigi changed my life for the better:

Agent Orange: Collateral Damage in Viet Nam by Philip Jones Griffiths, The Chain by Chien-Chi Chang, Open Wound by Stanley Greene, Ghetto by Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin, Purple Hearts by Nina Berman, Phil and Me by Amanda Tetrault, 51 Months by Carrie Levy, Cycles by Ilkka Uimonen, Zona: Siberian Prison Camps by Karl De Keyzer….

All are beautiful and unforgettable, and rightfully hold a deep place in my heart and photo history. I’d like to thank Gigi and urge people to share his work — taking pause to remember the mad Italian with the infectious energy and loving soul that made his books the absolute treasures that they are.
