Video: Endless Love — Inside the Photo Albums of Edith Windsor and Thea Spyer

On June 26, 2013, in the landmark case of United States v. Windsor, the U.S. Supreme Court held that the Defense of Marriage Act was unconstitutional — a victory that made Edith Windsor‘s marriage to Thea Spyer, her partner of more than 40 years, legally recognized by the federal government. It was an outcome Windsor prayed would benefit every gay American.

Edith Windsor is runner-up for TIME’s Person of the Year.

Photograph by Francesco Zizola—NOOR for TIME

Rome-based photographer Francesco Zizola was assigned to cover Pope Francis for TIME’s Person of the Year issue. Over the past month, Zizola captured the humble spirit surrounding the Holy Father as he takes a new direction in the Vatican living out the mission of his namesake.

Pope Francis is TIME’s Person of the Year for 2013.

Spot the Pope in nearly every Pictures of the Week gallery on LightBox from the past year.

Beautiful cover photograph by Asim Hafeez of Malala Yousafzai, who topped the short list for TIME’s 2012 Person of the Year.

“Mr. President

Your people are dying

People eat from the garbage

Look what is happening in your country

Misery is everywhere

People have nowhere to sleep

Today I speak fearlessly on behalf of the people

Crushed under the boots of injustice”

With these words, Tunisian rapper Hamada Ben Amor, also known as El Général, became one of the loudest voices of the Arab Spring. Recorded in December of 2010, the song, “Rais Lebled”, became a YouTube sensation and the anthem of the Tunisian revolution.

El Général appears in “The Protester: A Portfolio by Peter Hapak” featured on LightBox yesterday, part of TIME’s Person of the Year 2011. At the end of the shoot we asked El Général to freestyle for us, a cappella.
